Inspirational grassroots coach Barry
Listening to Coach Barry talk about his football journey on YouTube genuinely moved me. Here is a prolific, hard-working and honest man from humble beginnings in South London, who despite his own adversity, nurtures and continues to inspire, countless young minds from the grassroots level through to a world-class stage. Whether instilling self-belief and a positive mental attitude in future footballers or opening their eyes to wellness and mindfulness, his ability to help realise dreams and give back to the community is highly commendable.
His many decades of dedication, willingness, and service for a sport he is passionate about, is without question, honourable and still inspires me to this day. I was blessed to have trained under Coach Barry in my youth. His teachings encouraged us to believe in ourselves and to be great. Especially poignant, growing up during a racially charged period that had systemic challenges in place to ensure certain groups failed. However, within this dark space, he opened doors to a brighter future and brought hope and opportunity.Barry’s holistic approach to grassroots football included strong core values. His ethos was to educate and develop, so regardless of race and religious beliefs, love, sincerity and truth was the cornerstone. This truly broke down cultural barriers. Not only did he build a team, he developed lifelong bonds, respect and unity with his authentic coaching style. This inspirational man’s legacy will leave an indelible mark on football culture. This is without question a gift. Whatever your chosen sport as a coach, if you can replicate this in your own style, you will make an impact. The ikehi brand has elements of Barry’s ideology. Think bigger than yourself, give hope and show empathy. I believe this is how you implement positive change.
In the interview Coach Barry mentioned retirement. My first reaction was one of surprise, but after digesting his comment it began to sink in. Throughout his tenure as one of the top youth coaches in this country, he has created a blueprint and thus paves the way for the next generation of leaders to follow.
I guess, just like his previous mentor Derek Accra did. So, let’s create a better tomorrow until it’s our time to pass on the baton.
